Today, Fatemeh is at home, waiting for an electrician to arrive and carry out some work. Meanwhile, Hamzeh has gone to the wholesale produce market to buy fruit for his shop. Hearing a noise outside, Fatemeh goes to check who it is and discovers it is Umm al-Banin and her father. She invites them inside. Umm al-Banin then says to Fatemeh, "Fatemeh Khanom, I intend to divorce my husband. Since Hamzeh served as a witness to our marriage contract, does he happen to have any documentation of it? I need to check whether or not a mehrieh (dower) was stipulated for me." Fatemeh replies, "I recall you saying back then that you didn't want a *mehrieh*, as your husband, Ne'mat, wasn't in a good financial position—and besides, you two were in love." Umm al-Banin explains, "Yes, that’s true, but now I want to claim it from him because he is mistreating me." Fatemeh remarks, "You’re lucky he didn't take a second wife! Hamzeh’s second wife comes here every single day to harass me. She doesn't know you’re here right now; if she did, she’d show up and cause a public scene. She confronts anyone who visits this house, demanding to know why they came. If she happens to show up now and says anything, please don't take offense."
