Wife Has No Idea Her 'Drowned' Husband Is Alive in Europe — Police Find the Truth on His Laptop

His wife had NO idea... he was alive in Europe. 😳 On August 11, 2024, Ryan Borgwardt, a 44-year-old husband and father of three from Watertown, Wisconsin, went out on Green Lake in his kayak and texted his wife, "I'll start heading back to shore soon." The next morning deputies found his van at the shore and his kayak capsized. In October investigators learned his name had been run at the Canadian border two days after he vanished. His laptop showed a swapped hard drive, passport photos, money moved to a foreign bank, messages with a woman he met online and a $375,000 life-insurance policy. Was that enough? Tell us in the comments. ⚖️ Legal status: On August 26, 2025, Ryan Borgwardt pleaded no contest to one misdemeanor count of obstructing an officer (State of Wisconsin v. Ryan Borgwardt, Green Lake County case 2024CM176) and was found guilty. Judge Mark T. Slate sentenced him to 89 days in the county jail with Huber work-release privileges, above the jointly recommended 45 days. He had already paid $30,000 in restitution. Faking one's own death is not itself a crime in Wisconsin. His former wife and children are private people and are not named.
