😱 84-Year-Old Grandpa Has No Idea Police Already Have His DNA From a 1974 Murder 😱
For 50 years, Jon Miller lived a quiet life in southern Minnesota.
He worked the carnival. He went fishing. He grew old.
Then two investigators from Wisconsin knocked on his apartment door.
He invited them in. He talked about softball, the carnival and his old '72 Gremlin.
He had no idea they already had his DNA.
🧊 The 1974 Case
On February 15, 1974, 25-year-old Mary Schlais, a University of Minnesota student and artist from Minneapolis, was found stabbed to death beside a rural road in Spring Brook Township, Dunn County, Wisconsin. She was believed to be hitchhiking to an art show in Chicago.
A passing driver saw a man at the snowbank. Investigators found a stocking cap at the scene.
For five decades, nobody could put a name to it.
🧬 The Family Tree
In 2023 the Dunn County Sheriff's Office teamed up with Ramapo College's Investigative Genetic Genealogy Center. The DNA from the cap led to Wyoming, then Michigan, then to an adoption no one in the family knew about.
The match came back on November 4, 2024: what would have been Mary's 76th birthday.
🚪 The Knock
November 7, 2024. Owatonna, Minnesota.
"This must be one of them things that I watch on TV called Cold Case."
Less than a minute later: "All right. I did."
⚖️ Legal Status
On March 27, 2025, Jon K. Miller pleaded no contest to first-degree intentional homicide in Dunn County Circuit Court, Wisconsin. Judge James Peterson found him guilty and imposed the mandatory sentence of life in prison, plus $2,200 restitution and extradition costs (WEAU/WBAY, KSTP, March 27, 2025). His statements about how the killing happened are his own account; investigators told him the evidence showed multiple stab wounds.
