This 12-hour, two-day course is available through live online and in-person instruction. Earn 1.2 CEUs (12 PDHs) while learning proven methods for evaluating three-phase AC induction motors, single-phase motors, DC motors, synchronous motors, and wound rotor motors.
Why take this course?
Unexpected motor failures cause production downtime, expensive repairs, and operational disruptions. This vendor-neutral training teaches you how to identify developing motor faults, interpret electrical test results, and make informed run, repair, or replace decisions.
Course content
Day 1 – Testing de-energized motors
• Motor construction, common failure modes, and fault zones
• Motor nameplate data, visual inspections, and preliminary checks
• Electrical safety, lockout/tagout, NFPA 70E, and CSA Z462
• Insulation resistance testing and IEEE 43 requirements
• Polarization index, dielectric absorption, and hipot testing
• Winding resistance, continuity, and phase unbalance
• Phase angle, inductance, and motor circuit analysis
• Surge comparison testing for turn-to-turn winding faults
Day 2 – Testing and troubleshooting running motors
• Supply voltage, running current, and power quality analysis
• Motor starting, inrush current, and load problems
• Rotor faults and motor current signature analysis (MCSA)
• Bearing condition monitoring and vibration analysis
• Ultrasound and infrared thermography
• Testing single-phase, DC, synchronous, and wound rotor motors
• Motor troubleshooting procedures and diagnostic case studies
• Test documentation, trending, and maintenance recommendations
Who should attend?
• Industrial electricians and electrical maintenance technicians
• Electrical and plant engineers
• Reliability and predictive maintenance professionals
• Instrumentation and control technicians
• Maintenance supervisors and managers
• Motor repair and electrical testing personnel
• Utility, manufacturing, mining, and industrial maintenance teams
What you'll learn
