In most of continental Europe the thirty-first of October is a normal
Thursday. Nobody knocks. Nobody dresses up. There are no decorations,
because there is nothing to decorate for.
The day that matters is the next one — the first of November, All
Saints' Day. You go to the cemetery, you light a candle, you stand
there a while. In Poland, in Italy, in Spain, in Ireland, that is what
this week is.
So this is what happens when Europeans meet the American version. An
Italian woman who cannot get over that the sweets are free. A Spanish
mother who never once wore a costume as a child. A German exchange
student handed a treat bag by his host mother, with no idea what to do
with it. And an Italian grandmother standing in her daughter's
American front yard in SEPTEMBER, next to a singing animatronic.
And then the other direction. A Brit who never wondered where anyone
buys a six-foot skeleton, until she found Spirit Halloween. Germans who
dress genuinely terrifying. Norway, where the holiday is about thirty
years old. And an Irish woman shouting at a trick-or-treater, who says
the line this whole video is built on.
Here's the part Americans don't know: Europe started it. Samhain, in
Ireland. The first carved lanterns were turnips, not pumpkins. Irish
immigrants took it to America in the 1800s, America scaled it up by a
factor of a hundred, and now it's arriving back in Europe — in American
packaging.
