Homer’s Iliad — The Trojan War Story
How did Greece emerge from the Dark Ages and become the civilization we now call Ancient Greece?
After the collapse of the Bronze Age world, the Mycenaean palace civilization disappeared and Greece entered a period of decentralization that is often called the Greek Dark Ages. The great palaces were gone, Linear B disappeared, and the political world became fragmented.
But from this fragmented world, something new gradually emerged.
Instead of powerful palace kingdoms, independent communities began to develop. Over time, these communities evolved into the polis — the Greek city-state — creating a new political and social world.
And alongside this political transformation came another remarkable transformation: the emergence of a shared Greek cultural world.
In this episode, we explore how poetry became central to that world, and how Homer became its greatest cultural teacher.
Homer was not the only poet of ancient Greece, but the Iliad and the Odyssey became the most influential surviving works of the Greek epic tradition. Through these stories, Greeks could look back at a legendary heroic past and, at the same time, reflect on their own lives, values, conflicts, and humanity.
At the heart of the Iliad is not simply war, but the human ability to imagine another person's suffering.
When Priam, the old king of Troy, comes to Achilles and kisses the hand of the man who has killed his son Hector, something extraordinary happens. Achilles sees his own father in Priam. For a moment, the enemy is no longer simply an enemy.
It is one of the most powerful scenes of empathy in ancient literature.
And this is where the power of imagination becomes important.
To empathize is to imagine another person's pain, to step outside ourselves and see the world through another person's experience. The Iliad repeatedly asks us to do exactly that — to understand Achilles, Hector, Priam, Patroclus, Helen, and even those on the opposite side of the battlefield.
Homer therefore became much more than a poet.
For generations of Greeks, Homer became a teacher.
His poems were memorized, performed, studied, and passed from one generation to another. Later Greek thinkers, writers, philosophers, and political leaders grew up in a culture shaped by these stories. Even Plato, despite his criticism of poetry, could not escape the enormous cultural authority of Homer.
We also explore another crucial transformation: the arrival and spread of the Greek alphabet.
The adoption of alphabetic writing gave Greek speakers a new way to record, preserve, and transmit their language and literature. Together with the polis and the poetic tradition, it helped create the cultural environment in which Greek civilization would flourish.
So this episode is not simply about Achilles, Hector, Troy, or the Trojan War.
It is about how a fragmented Greece emerged from the Dark Ages, how the polis and alphabet transformed Greek society, how poetry created a shared cultural imagination, and how Homer became one of the greatest teachers of the Greek world.
From the ruins of the Bronze Age came a new Greece.
And at the heart of that Greece was a poet.
Homer.
