The BRDM-2 was one of the strangest and most recognizable armored reconnaissance vehicles of the Cold War.
Introduced in the early 1960s, it combined a gasoline V8 engine, four-wheel drive, amphibious capability and a compact armored hull designed for high mobility and reconnaissance.
But the BRDM-2 had an unusual trick: four small auxiliary wheels hidden beneath the center of the vehicle could be lowered to help it cross trenches, soft ground and difficult terrain.
Standard vehicles were also armed with a turret carrying a powerful 14.5 mm KPVT heavy machine gun alongside a 7.62 mm PKT.
On water, the BRDM-2 could propel itself using a rear water jet, turning this strange armored scout car into a true amphibious vehicle.
Thousands were built, exported across the world and adapted into numerous versions—including command vehicles, anti-tank missile carriers and air-defense platforms.
In this documentary, we explore the complete history of the BRDM-2—from its V8 engine and hidden wheels to its amphibious system, weapons, reconnaissance role, unusual variants and worldwide legacy.
Was the BRDM-2 an outdated armored car—or one of the most ingenious reconnaissance vehicles of its era?
