Every electron in the universe is identical — and the one-electron theory says that's because there is literally only one.
That claim came from physicist John Wheeler, in a 1940 phone call to a young graduate student named Richard Feynman. Their idea — that a single electron weaves forward and backward through all of time, appearing everywhere at once — is one of the strangest thoughts in the history of science. It's almost certainly wrong. But the piece of it that turned out to be right helped win Feynman the Nobel Prize, and quietly cracked open something we thought was solid: the idea that time moves at all.
