Pranayama is much more than a breathing exercise. It is a powerful yogic practice that works directly with the energies of the breath, the body and the nervous system — which is why preparation matters.
In the first 10 minutes of this video, I explain why I don’t recommend rushing straight into pranayama, especially if you are completely new to yoga. Before beginning, it is helpful to have an established asana practice, some awareness of your body, the ability to relax deeply, and enough openness in the chest to allow the breath to move without force.
In the second half, I guide you through a gentle Level 1 supine pranayama practice. This is a simple introduction for yoga practitioners who already know their bodies and are ready to begin exploring pranayama slowly and consciously.
There is no need to force the breath or chase an experience. The aim is to create space, sensitivity and steadiness, and to let the nervous system become accustomed to working with the breath gradually.
This is the first level in a series, with more pranayama practices to come.
If you already have an asana practice and would like to enter the world of pranayama gently, this is a good place to begin.
