Australia face the Soviet Union in the quarter-finals of the Seoul 1988 Olympic football tournament at Busan Gudeok Stadium, South Korea, on 25 September 1988. Coached by Frank Arok and captained by Charlie Yankos, Australia's side featured Paul Wade, Frank Farina, Graham Arnold and Alan Davidson. A place in the Olympic semi-finals was at stake against a Soviet team led by captain Viktor Losev and coach Anatoly Byshovets. After a goalless first half, two penalties from Igor Dobrovolski in the 50th and 54th minutes put the Soviet Union in control. Oleksiy Mykhaylychenko added a third in the 62nd minute, before Australia were reduced to ten men when David Mitchell was sent off in the 68th minute. The result ended Australia's Olympic campaign, while the Soviet Union went on to claim the gold medal.
