Sing charms to him every day. — Socrates (Plato's Phaedo) According to modern scholars, ancient Greek lullabies resembled protective magical incantations designed to protect the hearer from the attack of daimonic forces. They had a ritualistic nature and the magical potential to lull an audience to sleep or alleviate the fears of the performer. We can find related sources in the work of Simonides, Theocritus, Plato, and Homer. The composition "Lullaby" was composed by Giorgio Sancristoforo, an Italian artist and sound designer from Milan, who also serves as an art expert for the European Commission.The piece was inspired by his close collaboration with the Koumartzis family (@SEIKILO) and their joint efforts to bring the musical instruments of ancient Greece and Rome back to life in the 21st century. As for me, I decided to perform this beautiful piece on the lyre — a close relative of the kithara.
