Le Grand Tour d' Europe 2024 (DAY 44) - Geneva - Nancy
Sped up video recorded on a windscreen mounted GoPro.
The trip was a 52 day driving tour of northern Europe taking in 17 Countries. Almost the entire route avoiding motorways.
Day 44 - Wet, Wet, Wet
Setting off from Geneva the weather was fine and we headed west out of the city and crossed into France at the westernmost point of Switzerland, a lovely little place called Chancy. The boundary of the two countries actually passes down the centre of Le Rhône river.
Once across, back into France, we followed the course of Le Rhône for a while before our route gradually bent around to the north.
We made our way to a favourite point, that we have stopped at on all three of our large driving tours around Europe, Nantua. We have always had a brief stop at Lac de Nantua and have always had an ice cream there. Sadly there was no ice cream seller on this occasion.
When we left Nantua we really turned to head north. A long drive north through miles and miles of stunning, rolling French countryside, quaint little French villages.
Then.... it rained!
It rained and rained and rained. So much so that we passed many flooded fields and eventually found ourselves blocked by a large flood right across the road. We were turned around and had to very quickly try to find a new route. Easier than it sounds as a lot of the other routes were also flooded.
We eventually found our way past the worst of the floods. The next challenge was finding a toilet and as we were off our planned route and it was a Sunday that wasn't easy. We ended up getting permission to use the facilities at a local village hall which was open as a polling station for French national elections.
Onwards, we continued north until we finally made it to our hotel on the outskirts of Nancy.
I knew nothing of Nancy before this trip, but, as with several other places, it is definitely a place I would love to visit again in the future and spend a bit more time there. As it was, we caught a bus down from the hotel into the city centre and we were not disappointed!
With an absolutely beautiful UNESCO-listed square, 'Place Stanislas' at the heart of this beautiful city, we had a couple of hours to st(roll) around and then had a lovely evening meal in the square before catching the bus back to our hotel.
Tomorrow is one of the longest days of driving and subsequently videos of the entire trip but there are some fantastic stops along the route making this a very special day.
