Drum Lesson: Flam to Groove

Flam Rudiments in Groove The 40 International Drum Rudiments are generally divided into four main families: Rolls, Diddles, Flams, and Drags. Today, we’re focusing on flams. A flam consists of a grace note played just before the main note. The distance between the two notes can vary, creating anything from a close flam to a more open flam. When played on one surface, the flam creates its characteristic “ra-k” sound. But when the two notes are played on different surfaces, coordination becomes much more challenging. So, are flams only useful for fills and solos? Absolutely not! With a small adjustment, we can turn these flam patterns into unison strokes and apply them directly to grooves. In this video, I’ll demonstrate 11 flam rudiments, first on the snare and then within a groove — one bar of basic groove followed by one bar of the figure.
