Two evidence techs, one bloodstain, two different stories about the same swab. Three days into the Faith Hedgepeth murder trial, where did it go? This is State of North Carolina v. Miguel Enrique Salguero-Olivares, the Faith Hedgepeth murder trial in Durham County Superior Court before Judge Keith Gregory. Faith was 19, a UNC Chapel Hill student from the Haliwa-Saponi community in Hollister, N.C., on track to be the first in her family to graduate college. She was found in her bedroom on Sept. 7, 2012. Nobody was charged for nine years. He was arrested in 2021, has pleaded not guilty to the charges and is presumed innocent. If you are just finding this case, this is my catch-up on Days 1, 2 and 3 (Oct. 7-9, 2026), with the courtroom cut in. The State calls it a stranger case answered by the lab: his DNA on a rum bottle it says was the weapon, DNA and prints on a wine bottle, DNA on a food bag with a note. The defense says about 96 percent of the rum bottle's DNA mixture was Faith's, that only one small spot was tested in 13 years, and that a match tells you whose DNA it is, not when or where it was left. The judge has barred the defense from arguing that someone else did this. Faith's roommate, Karena Rosario, is not charged with anything. Then Day 3. On Sept. 10, 2012, a small bloodstain inside the bathroom door frame field-tested positive. CSI Tamika Price told the jury that swabbing it was a step that was missed. "Was that a mistake that y'all made?" "Yes, it was." Her trainer, Sheleathea Quick, said it was collected, placed in a white box and loaded into the truck, and then it was gone. I am not saying either one is lying. Either it was never collected or it was collected and lost, and nobody told the sergeant who asked for it. And the medical examiner's report came in with a line that Faith was last seen alive at 4 a.m., a line its own author, Dr. Lauren C. Scott, says she does not know is accurate. What I am carrying into Day 4: the State opened on the lab, and after three days the jury has not heard from one lab witness. That is my read, not the jury's, and the call is theirs. Court resumes Monday, Oct. 12, 2026, at 9:30 a.m. Eastern.
