0:00 The re-evaluation of the history of Castle A at Montezuma Castle National Monument through archaeological evidence and tribal oral histories. 1:32 Castle A 2:12 Montezuma Castle 25:44 Montezuma Well A burned ruin, an unburied man, and oral histories from opposite sides of an ancient conflict challenge the story told at Montezuma Castle National Monument. I examine the archaeological evidence from Castle A, including burned mortar, pottery, floors, human remains, tree-ring and radiocarbon research, and a moccasin found in the monument’s collections. I also follow the tribal accounts shared by Hopi, Yavapai, and Apache representatives and compare them with the physical evidence. I look at how the names Montezuma Castle and Montezuma Well shaped public memory, what NAGPRA revealed about the people once described as extinct, and why the history of this place cannot be told by archaeology alone.
