10 Prehistoric Tools Found Thousands of Years Before They Should Exist Number ten: The Bhimbetka Cave Drills. The Bhimbetka rock shelters of Madhya Pradesh, India, are among the oldest known sites of continuous human habitation on Earth, with the deepest archaeological layers dating to over one hundred thousand years ago. When archaeologist Vishnu Shridhar Wakankar began systematic surveys of the site in nineteen fifty-seven, he expected to find the usual record of ancient life, handprints, animal paintings, the scattered debris of prehistoric camps. What he and subsequent researchers documented instead was something far more perplexing: a series of small, circular boreholes drilled into the sandstone walls of the shelters, smooth-sided and consistent in diameter, showing none of the irregular fracturing that natural processes leave behind.
