These Prehistoric Weapons Were Too Advanced For Stone Age Warfare

10 prehistoric weapons that were far more advanced than we thought. From Stone Age engineering and ancient hunting technology to razor-sharp obsidian blades, our ancestors developed weapons that reveal just how sophisticated early human civilizations really were. This prehistoric history documentary explores 10 remarkable ancient weapons and technologies that demonstrate the ingenuity of early humans, Neanderthal-era hominins, and the societies that followed them. Discover the atlatl, an ancient spear thrower that multiplied the power of the human arm; the 300,000-year-old Schöningen spears; the earliest bows and poison-tipped arrows; a mammoth ivory boomerang from Ice Age Europe; barbed bone harpoons; prehistoric slings; microlith composite weapons; thermally treated stone tools; and the macuahuitl, the obsidian-edged war club used by the Aztecs. How did prehistoric humans manufacture specialized hunting weapons without metal? How did early toolmakers understand aerodynamics, leverage, adhesives, and heat treatment thousands of years before modern engineering? And why could volcanic glass produce cutting edges finer than those of modern steel? Through archaeology, prehistoric technology, experimental reconstruction, and the history of ancient weapons, we explore how our ancestors developed increasingly sophisticated tools to survive, hunt, and adapt to changing environments. These discoveries challenge the popular image of Stone Age humans as primitive toolmakers. Their weapons reveal generations of experimentation, technical knowledge, and engineering traditions that existed long before writing, cities, and modern civilization.
