The Tragic Story of Aradale — The Man Locked Inside for 63 Years
#aradale #australianhistory #asylum
In 1926, Bill Wallace shot a man during an argument over a cigarette in a Melbourne café. He was never tried. Two doctors declared him insane and unfit to plead, and he was sent to a converted gold rush gaol called J Ward. He was still there sixty-three years later. When the state finally offered him his freedom at around a hundred years old, he refused it. This is the entire story of Aradale.
In this video, we trace Aradale from the gold rush that created it, through the ha-ha walls built so patients could not see they were enclosed, through two signatures to be committed and up to eight to be released, through an average stay of twenty-three years and a child population that ran to one in four, through restraint, hydrotherapy, unmodified electroconvulsive therapy and the lobotomy, to J Ward — where Charles Foussard served seventy years and three hundred and three days, the longest documented prison term in world history. We correct the 13,000 deaths figure that every ghost tour repeats, and the story of the three unmarked graves. And we close five weeks ago, when the gates shut with no warning and a town of eight thousand people lost four out of every five weekend bookings.
They went in through the gate and most of them never came back out through it.
