They Said She Built For GHOSTS. The Hammers Stopped In 1906. Then Came Her SAFE: Sarah Winchester The official story fits on a postcard. A rich widow, haunted by everyone her family's rifle ever killed, kept building a house that could never be finished, because a medium told her she would die the day the hammers stopped. Millions of people have walked those hallways believing it. But her own letters describe a builder fixing her own mistakes. Her attorney said she did not hire a single carpenter after the earthquake of 1906. The medium from Boston first appears in a book published in 1967, forty-five years after her death, and no one has ever found a trace of him. And while the newspapers called her house a mystery, she was quietly paying for a tuberculosis hospital named after her husband. When she died in September 1922, relatives forced her safes open looking for a dinner service of solid gold. What they found was much smaller.
