Grandpa is moving to a smaller place with no garage, so his tools come to Avery's house in a box - along with forty jar lids and no jars. One wrench is hers. It is gray and heavy and the best thing she owns. And it slips. It slips on the nut that is its size, and it slips again. Gus appoints himself supplier and brings her a bolt as long as his arm, a bicycle pedal, the other pedal, and finally a block of wood with a nut drawn on it in pencil. Then Avery looks closely at the wrench's mouth and sees why. What children find out: the number on a wrench is how wide its mouth is. One that fits holds the flat sides of a nut.
