Wear plate like Hardox 450 is around three times as hard as mild steel. That hardness is why it lasts in a tipper body or chute - and why it cracks on the press brake, burns drill bits and splits beside welds. The thing that gets blamed is almost never the plate. It is nearly always heat, an edge or a radius. CHAPTERS 00:00 Hard plate, wrong blame 00:30 What wear plate is 01:01 Cracks on the bend 01:29 The bend that opens 01:57 Cracks beside the weld 02:27 Parts cut soft 02:57 Cracks that come later 03:26 Burnt drill bits 03:53 The groove beside the weld 04:19 Cracked by impact 04:47 Heat, edge, radius Covered in this episode: • What wear plate actually is: quench, temper, Brinell hardness • Cracks on the bend: radius, rolling direction, edge condition, cold plate • The bend that springs open: yield strength, overbend and tonnage • Cracks beside the weld: hydrogen, preheat and softer filler • Small parts cut soft: tempering heat from flame cutting • Delayed cut cracking on thick plate • Burnt drill bits: speed, feed, coolant, rigidity • The soft groove beside every weld • Cracked by impact: hardness versus toughness • Heat, edge, radius FREE CALCULATORS Press brake tonnage calculator https://www.sheetmetalcalculator.com/...
