Why Dreaming About Your Goals Might Be Stopping You You have a big dream. Maybe it’s a business, a book, a body you want, a life in another country. You’ve imagined it in detail. And somehow, months or years later, you’re still imagining. If that sounds familiar, you’re not lazy, and you’re not lacking ambition. You may be running into a quirk of human psychology that quietly turns big dreams into a substitute for action. In this video, four ideas from psychology about why people who dream big often do very little, and what actually helps: why dreaming feels like doing, and what research by Gabriele Oettingen suggests about positive fantasies and effort, plus a simple one-week “daydream ratio” check; why the dream can protect you from the test, and the difference between potential and proof; why talking about your goal can feel like progress, and what to share instead (the process, not the outcome); and the idea that changes behavior the most, pairing the dream with the obstacle using WOOP (Wish, Outcome, Obstacle, Plan) and if-then planning. You’ll also see two worked examples (starting a small business and fitness), a few honest cautions, and a simple one-week plan. A quick honest note: some of this research, especially around announcing goals, is still debated and has had mixed results when repeated, so treat it as an idea to test in your own life, not a fixed rule. Dreams themselves aren’t the problem. Dreaming without a doorway is. And if you feel stuck, flat, or hopeless about nearly everything, not just one goal, that may be more than a motivation issue, and talking to a professional is a good step. ⏱ Timestamps (approximate): 0:00 - The big dream you keep imagining 1:00 - Idea 1: Dreaming feels like doing 3:10 - Idea 2: The dream protects you from the test 5:20 - Idea 3: Talking about it feels like progress 7:00 - Idea 4: Dream, obstacle, plan (WOOP) 9:40 - Two examples: a business and fitness 10:50 - Honest cautions 11:20 - Your one-week plan If this gave you a different way to look at your own big plans, subscribe.
