Confidence is the most overrated thing you can chase, and the reason is simple: it leaves the moment you need it. You feel it on a good day, when you’ve prepared and everything is going well. Then one sharp comment or one failed attempt arrives, and it disappears. If your calm depends on the conditions being right, you don’t own it. The conditions do.
Japanese martial arts chose a different target. They didn’t train confidence. They trained Fudoshin, the immovable mind: not a mind that feels nothing, but a mind with a center that stays put while everything around it moves.
In this video, four ideas behind Fudoshin: why confidence is a feeling that follows results while Fudoshin is a position you hold regardless of them; the four things the old schools said shake the mind (surprise, fear, doubt, and confusion), and why naming them creates a gap you can act from; how the center is actually built, through small promises kept when no one is watching and small doses of controlled discomfort; and why an immovable mind is not a rigid one, with roots that hold and branches that flex.
A quick honest note: this video is for general reflection, not medical or mental health advice. If your anxiety or fear feels constant or overwhelming, or gets in the way of daily life, please consider talking to a professional.
