Koyasan Okunoin: The Mysterious Bonji Reflecting on the Water Mirror of Gobyobashi Bridge
In this video, I introduce a truly mystical sight at Koyasan Okunoin: the Bonji (Sanskrit characters) carved on the underside of Gobyobashi Bridge, reflecting onto the surface of the Tamagawa River flowing beneath.
Gobyobashi Bridge consists of 36 bridge planks, and together with the bridge as a whole, they symbolize the 37 deities of the Vajradhatu (Diamond Realm) Mandala. Each plank has a Bonji representing a deity carved on its underside facing the river.
These sacred characters are normally difficult to see directly, but under very specific conditions, they appear on the surface of the clear river like a mirror.
【Conditions for the Bonji to Appear】
Weather: Clear skies / sunny
Wind: Light winds and a calm water surface
Time: Morning (around 10:00 AM) is said to be the best time to see them
Season: Harder to observe during summer and winter
However, even when these conditions are met, there is no guarantee they will always be visible. As the saying goes, "mountain weather is fickle," and weather or wind conditions in Koyasan can change suddenly. Furthermore, even a slight ripple caused by a fish swimming in the Tamagawa River can disturb the water surface and obscure the reflection.
This footage was filmed around 9:30 AM in early October 2026.
Even during the shoot, drifting clouds would occasionally block the sunlight, causing the reflection to vanish momentarily. But once the clouds passed and the light returned, the mystical Bonji emerged once again upon the water mirror.
This fleeting display—appearing and disappearing with the slightest change in weather or water ripples—shows just how rare and precious this moment is.
On this day, by sheer coincidence, I was blessed with the opportunity to meet a practitioner who had just completed the 100-day rigorous ascetic training known as Shido-kegyo in Koyasan Shingon Buddhism, celebrating their Joman (full completion). Seeing someone who had overcome such prolonged, demanding days of prayer and practice—radiating a serene yet dignified spiritual presence—made this a truly profound and treasured encounter.
According to legend, Kobo Daishi Kukai was guided by a dog sent by the Kariba Myojin, and even today, you can sometimes see visitors accompanied by dogs paying their respects at Koyasan. I hope you can feel a sense of this sacred atmosphere as well.
▶ The Bonji in this video are completely unedited and unaltered, showing nature's genuine creation just as it is. Please enjoy this rare and normally hidden sight.
⚠️ 【Important Notice】
The area beyond Gobyobashi Bridge at Koyasan Okunoin is considered sacred, and entering the Tamagawa River is strictly prohibited.
This footage was filmed from a safe location before Gobyobashi Bridge.
