In 1935, three brothers stormed the grandest opera house in America and made the funniest film of the decade: A Night at the Opera. After their Paramount contract expired, the Marx Brothers were rescued by legendary producer Irving Thalberg, who toured them with the script on stage to sharpen every gag before the cameras rolled. The result was MGM's comedy triumph of 1935, later preserved by the U.S. Library of Congress in the National Film Registry. This then-and-now tribute follows the three stars: Groucho Marx (1890–1977), the fast-talking Otis B. Driftwood, who went on to conquer television with You Bet Your Life and won an honorary Oscar; Chico Marx (1887–1961), the piano-playing Fiorello whose friendship with Thalberg brought the brothers to MGM; and Harpo Marx (1888–1964), the silent Tomasso, whose golden harp solos could stop the chaos cold. From the stateroom crammed with fifteen people, to the shredded contract, to the opera finale that collapses into glorious anarchy — this is the full story of the cast of A Night at the Opera, then and now. Rest in peace: Groucho Marx (1890–1977), Chico Marx (1887–1961), Harpo Marx (1888–1964).
