The History of the TIBETAN BUDDHISM

The history of Tibetan Buddhism is the story of how a religion carried across the Himalayas became inseparable from Tibetan language, culture, education, and everyday life. This documentary explains why Tibetan Buddhism survived even after the empire that first sponsored it collapsed. We begin in pre-Buddhist Tibet, where local gods, sacred mountains, funerary traditions, and ritual specialists already shaped life on the plateau. The story then follows Songtsen Gampo, Trisong Detsen, Shantarakshita, Padmasambhava, and the founding of Samye. It reveals how Indian scholars and Tibetan lotsawas created a technical language capable of preserving Buddhist philosophy, and why some Indian works later survived through Tibetan translations. After the Tibetan Empire fractured, Buddhism adapted through local communities, manuscripts, teacher-student lineages, and the later revival associated with Atisha, Rinchen Zangpo, Marpa, and new monastic centers. The documentary also explains the development of Nyingma, Kagyu, Sakya, Gelug, and Bon; the economic power of monasteries; Buddhism’s role in ordinary Tibetan life; and how exile after 1959 helped carry Tibetan traditions around the world.
