We have been to Granada once, in the daytime. Tonight we are across the valley from the palace, up in the old white lanes of the Albaicin. From the little plaza at the top of the hill, the whole length of the Alhambra is lit gold along its ridge, the cypresses stand black against it, and far behind, the snow on the Sierra Nevada is catching the moon. A small fountain is running beside the wall. On a terrace nearby, under a brass lantern, somebody is playing a Spanish guitar. Did you know? The name Alhambra comes from Arabic and means "the red one" - most likely for the colour of its walls in daylight. At night, under the lights, it turns gold instead. And the building was made to be read as well as seen: poems by the court poets of Granada, among them Ibn Zamrak, are carved into the plaster of its walls and around its fountains, so that walking through the rooms is also a way of reading them. By the early 1800s, though, the palace stood half-abandoned. In 1829 the American writer Washington Irving was allowed to live for a while in its empty rooms, and the book he wrote about it, Tales of the Alhambra, sent travellers from all over the world back up this hill to see it for themselves.
