We're proud to reintroduce one of the most amazing American composers you likely have never even heard of: Julia Perry. Also a gifted vocalist, this fantastically talented woman of the mid-twentieth century composed in the neoclassical style. She was a student of Luigi Dallapiccola and Nadia Boulanger, and composed across all classical musical idioms. Perry wrote over one hundred major works in her short life, including operas for which she'd wrote the Italian libretti herself. She is also credited with twelve full symphonies. Perry garnered a myriad of awards and critical acclaim from some of the finest artistic institutions in the world and was the first woman of color to have a piece premiered by the New York Philharmonic. Her star rose rapidly, but faded before it had the chance to truly peak. She remains one of the great rediscoveries of twentieth century classical music, so worthy of unearthing and celebrating. So once again, we are faced with this recurring question: why has she been excluded from the lexicon of great American composers where she so clearly belongs? Tune in to learn more about this extraordinary woman, hear some of her beautiful music, and join us as we continue our journey to honor the lives and contributions of artists whose fascinating stories must be shared. Written and narrated by Alicia Waller and Marielle Murphy. Original artwork by Caitlin Rain.
