Adventures of Lolo 3 (NES) Playthrough

A playthrough of Hal's 1991 puzzle game for the NES, Adventures of Lolo 3. Lolo 3 is a super-satisfying bookend to the NES Lolo trilogy. It refines and expands upon everything introduced in the first two games, modernizes the presentation, and delivers 100 new puzzles to solve - twice the number found in either    • Adventures of Lolo (NES) Playthrough   or    • Adventures of Lolo 2 (NES) Playthrough  . This time, the Great Devil has turned everyone in Eggerland to stone while Lolo and Lala were off romancing one another at a nearby lake. Since they were the only ones to avoid becoming statues, the couple take it upon themselves to save the day, and because this is a Lolo game, they do that by solving puzzle rooms. Lala hasn't been kidnapped, so you can play as her this time out. She's essentially a pink Lolo with a bow, but it's nice to see her not cast as the damsel in distress again. The tutorial stages are a perfect addition for bringing new players into the fold, and the overworld map screen gives the game a stylish way to split levels by theme, making the stages feel more like parts of a bigger world than the tower setup managed in the first two games. The puzzles introduce a couple of new mechanics: there are bridges that can be crossed a limited number of times, and in the underwater stages, there's a new whale creature (Moby) that suck you in to dead ends. The challenge is well balanced, too. The difficulty curve is much kinder to newcomers: it gives you a chance to get comfortable with the rules before pulling the rug out from under you, and you're given unlimited lives, but the puzzles near the end manage to be just as mind-bending as anything you'll find in Lolo 2. There are even several fun boss fights tossed in to break up the flow. The only complaint I'd level at Lolo 3 is that it sometimes leans a bit too heavily on puzzles that derive their difficulty from how many steps they require to solve, and how many of those steps can boil down to trial-and-error. But overall, Adventures of Lolo 3 is an excellent sequel that's packed with dozens of hours of quality gameplay. If you enjoyed the first two games, you won't want to skip this one.
