Kattaikuthu Meets Climate Change | The Story of Veppathin Veriyattam

What happens when climate change moves beyond reports, data and scientific explanations, and enters the world of stories, music, humour and performance? 🎭🌡️ ‘Veppathin Veriyattam’ (A Frenzied Dance of Heat) is a 45-minute Kattaikuthu performance developed by Thilagam Theatre Group in collaboration with Asar Social Impact Advisors. In this video, Kattaikuthu artist and National Award recipient Thilagavathi Palani shares the story behind the performance and why the group chose extreme heat as its central theme. From children struggling to concentrate during periods of intense heat to the postponement of school reopening, the performance explores how rising temperatures are affecting everyday life. The team also reflects on the inaugural performance at Vedavalli Vidyalaya School in Walajapet, where teachers and students responded to the use of theatre, humour, colourful costumes, music and memorable characters to communicate a complex issue. The experience points to an important question: Can traditional art forms help make climate change easier to understand, especially for younger generations? ‘Veppathin Veriyattam’ explores how culture and storytelling can create a deeper connection with climate issues and bring conversations about extreme heat closer to everyday experiences. 🎭 Veppathin Veriyattam: A Frenzied Dance of Heat 🎭 Kattaikuthu 🌡️ Extreme Heat 🌍 Climate Change 📍 Tamil Nadu #Kattaikuthu #VeppathinVeriyattam #ClimateChange #ClimateCommunication #ExtremeHeat #ClimateCulture #Asar
