Trelewis to Pen Y Fan | Bannau Brycheiniog | Wales | 23 Mile Hike, Off Road Mountain Trek

Driving over the local mountain, you can just about see the tip of Pen Y Fan, the highest peak in South Wales. I've always wondered if I could walk there from home, staying off the roads the whole way, using nothing but the old mountain trails and tracks. Turns out you can. It just destroys your feet. Starting in Trelewis, up onto Gethlegar Common, round Merthyr Common, over the peaks above Talybont Reservoir, into Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons), and up onto the mountain itself. About 12 hours later, and a lift home from the Storey Arms car park, I finally had my answer. 23 miles, 1,155 metres of elevation gain, one very long day off the beaten path.
