NOTES: Montreal, Ontario Canada's REM (Réseau Express Métropolitain) is a Light Metro Rapid Transit system serving Greater Montreal. It is owned by Quebec Deposit and Investment Fund (Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec) (CDPQ; operating as La Caisse). It is operated by private contractor PULSAR, a commercial joint partnership between Montreal-based international engineering firm AtkinsRéalis (infrastructure and operations management) and Alstom (train manufacturer and maintenance partner). The tracks and right of way are owned by Quebec Deposit and Investment Fund (La Caisse). The tracks are Standard Gauge 4' 8.5". Traction power is by overhead wire at 1,500 Volts DC. Tracks are exclusive use and have no at-grade crossings. The entire route is double tracked. The rail network does not have a Reporting Mark. REM does not use Scheduled Train Numbers.
In this video we look at the longest route pairing consisting of the A1-Main Line and the A4-Deux-Montagnes Line from Brossard Station, through downtown Montreal Central Station (Gare Centrale) to Deux-Montagnes station for a combined 28 rail miles. Ride duration is about 55 minutes (0.917 hours). The trains average 30.5 mph including stops and their top speed is 56 mph (62 mph capable). On Time Performance numbers are not made public. Annual passengers are about 27,000,000 (estimated) A1+A3+A4 combined=33,800,000 (2025). Frequency is 288 (Northbound + Southbound) trains per Day =2,016 per week, =104,832 per year and averaging about 258 passengers per train. Pricing (Full Route) Adult Undiscounted $9.50 CA (6.75 US)
Operational Equipment consists of (106) 2-car Alstom Metropolis Saint-Laurent trains, based on the Alstom Metropolis platform, with customization for severe winter conditions. Busier trains couple two 2-car trains together. The equipment was built in by Alstom in India and delivered to Montreal by ship. Each 2-car train seats 64 passengers and adding standing capacity comes to about 300. The trains feature double glazed windows, ice-scraping pantographs, and heated automatic couplings.
The REM (Réseau Express Métropolitain) began operation in 2023. It gathered pieces of other operational, defunct and extinct railways in the greater Montreal, QC area.
The REM trains are fully automated (GoA4 level) and driverless. There is seating right up to the front windows. All trains are heated and air conditioned. All platforms are indoors with sliding glass doors that open coordinated with train doors when in station, keeping patrons on the platforms comfortable while awaiting and departing trains. Digital signs above the platform doors indicate if car is full or not. All stations feature level train boarding.
