A lot of you told us what was in your driveway, so this one is built from your comments. Holden, Ford or Valiant: seventeen things about the 1970s family car, from the wagon you wish you had kept to the year Holden lost the top spot by 572 cars. Every price and date comes from the papers of the day and the official count: Canberra Times price lists and car yard ads from 1971 to 1977, the Bureau of Statistics motor vehicle census of September 1976, the Navy News on the XA Falcon, the 1975 Canberra student debate on football, meat pies, kangaroos and Holden cars, and Pedr Davis on Ford outselling Holden in 1977. A second researcher tried to prove every line wrong before it was recorded. Thirteen of the car shots are real photographs of surviving, restored cars, taken in recent years (credits below). Every other picture is an AI-made reconstruction of the period, not a photograph.
