Long before the Aggies take the field at Kyle Field, one of Texas A&M’s most impressive game-day traditions is already underway. The Texas A&M Corps of Cadets forms on the Quad and marches through the heart of campus, continuing a tradition rooted in the university’s beginnings as a military college in 1876.
The Corps of Cadets is one of the largest uniformed student bodies in the nation and is often described as the “Keepers of the Spirit” and “Guardians of Tradition” at Texas A&M. Before home football games, the Corps conducts its traditional march-in, with thousands of spectators lining the route to watch the cadets pass in military formation.
Leading the procession is the famous Fightin’ Texas Aggie Band, whose members are themselves cadets. Behind them come the Corps units with their guidons and flags, joined by other familiar Aggie traditions, including Reveille and Parsons Mounted Cavalry. The sound of military music, marching feet and cheering Aggies creates one of the most distinctive scenes in college football.
The march is about much more than getting to a football game. It is a visible connection between generations of Aggies. Cadets today follow in the footsteps of those who marched across the same campus decades ago, including thousands who later served their country in the armed forces.
For visitors to College Station, watching the Corps of Cadets march before an Aggie football game offers a glimpse into what makes Texas A&M different. Before the roar of more than 100,000 fans fills Kyle Field, the precision and pageantry of the Corps remind everyone that Aggie football is surrounded by traditions reaching far beyond the game itself.
