12 protein foods that fight muscle loss after 60, ranked by the evidence, not the hype. Most protein lists rank foods by grams on a label. We ranked them by what matters after 60: how well each food helps you reach about 25 to 30 grams of protein in a single meal, how easy it is to chew and prepare, and how strong the research really is in older adults. In this video: why an international group of experts on aging believes the standard protein recommendation is too low for people over 65, why breakfast is where most older adults fall short, why bone broth and collagen fall to the bottom of the list, what a study of men in their seventies found about soy, the 40% egg claim and where it really came from, and the large trial in aged care homes where extra dairy meant fewer falls and fractures. THE PANTRY VERDICT "Older adults may need more protein than the standard recommendation": Promising. A strong expert position, still being refined. "Every protein food builds muscle equally": Myth. "Dairy foods help older adults fall less and break fewer bones": Proven, at least in aged care homes. THREE BREAKFASTS WITH ABOUT 25 GRAMS OF PROTEIN 6 oz plain Greek yogurt with 2 tablespoons of peanut butter. 2 eggs with 1/2 cup of cottage cheese. Oatmeal cooked in 1 cup of milk, topped with 1/2 cup of Greek yogurt. SAFETY If you have kidney disease, talk to your doctor before eating more protein. People with severe kidney disease who are not on dialysis may need to limit it. Canned light tuna is a lower-mercury choice; albacore (white) tuna has more mercury. Processed meats like bacon, hot dogs, and many deli meats are linked to colorectal cancer, so keep them occasional. If you have diabetes or high cholesterol, ask your doctor how many eggs are right for you. Some canned fish and cottage cheese are high in sodium, so compare labels. Protein works best alongside physical activity. Never reduce or stop a prescribed medicine because of something in your pantry. Which food would you move higher on this list, and why?
