Shemeka Stabler was shot trying to stop a man from killing her friend. She survived, and told other women: "If you're in an abusive relationship, get out of it." Twenty days later, she was shot again. Police say the suspect was his brother.
This is the story of Shemeka "Meka" Stabler, a 31-year-old mother from Prichard, Alabama, and the friend she treated like a little sister.
On October 3, 2019, police say TyVontae Johnson, 24, shot his ex-girlfriend Jasmine Fields, 26, as she was leaving him, and shot her friend Shemeka Stabler, 31, who tried to stop him. He then killed himself. Shemeka survived and spoke at Jasmine's vigil. On October 23, 2019, Shemeka was shot multiple times and found in her car on I-165 while driving herself to the hospital. She died. Police arrested TyVontae's 19-year-old brother, Tremaine Johnson, and charged him with murder. Prosecutors called it retaliatory. He pleaded not guilty and is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
