If there was ever one gig that I wish I would never talk about, it's this one. The now infamous gig at the CoreStates Center in Philadelphia unfortunately was the result of Liam just not wanting to be on this tour, and eventually, the whole band didn't want to be on this tour.
After letting the crowd use them as target practice in Toronto, Oasis retreats back to America to the grand opening of the new CoreStates Center, to replace the old Spectrum that once stood. This building is still in use today and is used by both the Philadelphia 76ers, and the Philadelphia Flyers. However, back in 1996, this was a brand new arena, and while Ray Charles is technically the first artist to perform there with a secret gig on the 13th of August that same year, the inaugural concert just happened to be Oasis and The Screaming Trees co-headlining with The Manic Street Preachers as the undercard.
Most people already know about the beef between Liam and Mark Lanegan, so I won't go too deep into it, but I would assume by now they had the "Howling Branches" conversation, and you know a tour is in for a rough ride when both frontmen hate each other.
To break in the new arena, a drunk Liam saunters on stage and "tries" to sing with his inebriated vocals. Off-key, out of tune, and not giving a fuck, because why bother if you don't want to be there?
If you're looking for a great performance, I recommend going elsewhere. If you want an entertaining performance... I'd just watch the video of this gig. The audio itself doesn't give justice to how blasted Liam is tonight.
Liam butchers every song he sings, but obviously, Noel saves the day with his acoustic set. A very good performance of Whatever is the highlight of this gig, if I had to create one.
Even the last song, I Am The Walrus, doesn't get a break, as Liam decides he doesn't like it and tells the band to stop so they can start again. Mercifully, the band finishes the song as Liam runs around the stage and the floor and waves the crowd goodbye. The disaster is over.
Liam's antics would continue to screw Oasis with another intoxicated Liam performance of Champagne Supernova on the MTV Music Awards just a couple days later.
Terrible concert honestly.
