Yom Kippur, Yeshua Our Scapegoat

Yeshua, our Scapegoat who carries our sins away as far as the East is from the West. Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, takes us into the heart of the biblical story of sin, judgment, cleansing, forgiveness, and reconciliation. Leviticus 16 describes the one day each year when the high priest entered the Most Holy Place and made atonement for himself, the priesthood, the sanctuary, and the people of Israel. Isaiah later confronts a people who practice religious fasting while continuing injustice and oppression. Matthew presents Yeshua as the greater sign of Jonah and later shows Him sitting as King and separating the sheep from the goats. At first these passages may seem quite different, but together they ask a profound question: What does Yahweh ultimately intend to do about sin? When read through Yeshua’s words in Luke 24:44 and Peter’s proclamation in Acts 3:21, they point toward something greater than punishment alone.
