For drummer and composer Rory Tiganis-Hannan, those in-between states aren’t just a metaphor, they’re the lifeblood of his music. Blurring nu jazz, fusion, neo-soul, and modern jazz, Rory’s quartet makes music that feels both meticulously crafted and joyfully improvised. The story of this band begins with a late-night call to play The Night Cat, supporting friends Steppers. With just weeks to prepare, Rory, Aaron Evans, Patrick Duncan-Deveny, and Thomas Coleman Bell wrote new tunes, hit the stage, and found their voice. That spark has carried through ever since — from recording sessions to festival sets, and now to Bhive. This performance opens with Stretch Limo, a groove born from an improvised jam and expanded into a slinky, elastic opener. Later, its outro reappears as an interlude, flipped into something new with Rory’s drum solo at the centre. Subaquatic dives into deeper waters, revisiting a tune co-written with fellow drummer Alby Rolfe, while DSV (“Dark Song Vibez”) pushes into darker territory, slipping in a cheeky hip hop reference midstream. Mischief, groove, and fearless experimentation all rolled into one. With his debut album Inbetween States on the horizon, Rory’s quartet shows exactly why Melbourne’s scene thrives: friends with strong ideas, sharper instincts, and a love for the unexpected.
