The Annwen Roberts Quintet Episode | Ep. 34

Annwen Roberts Quintet brings together a group of musicians who have grown close through Melbourne’s university and jazz scenes. Tristan Meffre is Annwen’s oldest friend, while the rest of the band came together through university and have each played an important role in the development of this music. The sound sits somewhere between spiritual jazz, folk melodies and what Annwen describes as the kind of music you might hear in a mystical tavern somewhere between worlds. There are influences from artists like Matt Carmichael, but the music ultimately feels very personal, melodic, atmospheric and a little strange in the best way. The set features four pieces, three of which are dedicated to Annwen’s cat, Moocow. “Moocows Reel” is about getting to know Moocow again after he went missing on the first night Annwen brought him home. “Eyeshine” tells the story of searching for him with Tristan at midnight, shining torches into the darkness looking for the glint of his eyes. “Dirty Paws” follows Moocow on his walks in a harness. Closing the set is “Morning Tree,” a piece about recovering and moving through experiences of male-perpetrated violence, originally appearing on Annwen’s first album, Sky Omens. There’s a lot of personal history behind these songs. Annwen describes composition as something that never came naturally and something she has had to work hard at over the years. She never expected she would end up leading a band, which makes hearing these pieces performed by a group this close to her music all the more meaningful. The Moocow story continues with an upcoming EP recording session on September 20, followed by a performance at Clarence Jazz Fest in February.
