There, Old Lady Meng ladles a bowl of soup to every passing soul: drink it, and all of one life — every face, every love, every sorrow — dissolves away, so the soul may be born again clean and new. In life, a girl and a young man loved each other with all their hearts, yet fate would not let them be together. When she died, she came to the bridge and Meng Po held out the bowl. She wept, and shook her head. She would not forget him. To refuse the soup is to be refused rebirth. So she gave herself to the cold black river and waited — a thousand years beneath the water, while high on the bridge above, the one she loved crossed over lifetime after lifetime, drank the soup each time, and walked on without ever seeing her. She called; he never heard. When the thousand years were spent, she rose at last and walked into the mortal world to find him. She found him — living a stranger's ordinary life. She played their old song on a bamboo flute. For a heartbeat, he paused… then smiled at her as one smiles at a stranger, and turned away. She kept everything. He kept nothing.
