The banteng is a wild ox from Southeast Asia, and in 2024 the IUCN declared it critically endangered. Only about 3,300 remain in the wild, and poaching and snares are still shrinking those herds. On the other side of the world, on a remote peninsula at the top of Australia, a population of banteng has been living wild for more than 170 years. It started with a small group of animals left behind when a failed British colony was abandoned in 1849, and today it fills an entire peninsula. Is that herd a pest, a trophy animal, or a lifeline for a species running out of time? The answer depends on who you ask, and on what the animal really is. Where are you watching from? Tell us in the comments, and if you've hunted or visited the Top End, share what you saw. #banteng #Australia #wildlife #invasivespecies #endangeredspecies #NorthernTerritory #feralanimals
