Left Chennai at 10 PM: We started our journey from Chennai to Velankanni by car at 10 PM. Overnight Drive: It was an 8-hour drive. Since it was nighttime, we couldn't explore much along the way, but the drive itself was smooth and pleasant. Budget-Friendly Breakfast: Around 7–8 AM, we stopped for breakfast at a small eatery. We had four delicious idlis for just ₹25! Diverted Route: As we neared Velankanni, the police diverted the traffic multiple times. After taking several detours, we finally reached the main Velankanni highway after 16 km. Auto Ride to the Shrine: Vehicles weren't allowed beyond a certain point, so we hired an auto. They charged ₹200 for just 1–2 km, but we had no other option. A Sea of Devotees: The auto dropped us near the church. People from all over were arriving in autos and cars, creating an awe-inspiring atmosphere. Walking into the Crowd: Excited to explore, I walked towards the shrine. The crowd was far bigger than I had anticipated, packed with people from various places. Hopes and Prayers: Everyone came with their own deep wishes—praying for a child, good health, a job, or marriage. Seeing some people return with fulfilled vows and others praying with hopeful hearts was deeply moving. Local Exploitation: On the downside, some small vendors were overcharging and taking advantage of the visitors. Emotional Moments Inside: Once inside, I saw tears in many eyes—a powerful expression of their deep devotion and vows. The Darshan: We entered the shrine at 10 AM, had a peaceful darshan of Our Lady of Good Health, and stepped out by 11 AM. Exploring the Grounds: After leaving the church around 11 AM, I started exploring the open grounds. The scorching sun made it intensely hot, leaving the area mostly empty except for a few families staying in temporary tents. Exhaustion Sets In: Having had no proper sleep during the overnight journey, the extreme heat made it almost unbearable to stand outside. Profound Faith and Penance: As we walked around the back of the church near the statues, I saw devotees fulfilling their vows by crawling on their knees across the rough ground. Seeing them do this in the blistering midday heat at 12 PM was genuinely shocking and deeply moving. Generous Annadhanam: The church was serving free meals—like lemon rice and sambar rice—to all pilgrims. Additionally, individual devotees who had pledged vows prepared massive pots of food to feed everyone, without any discrimination. Shelter for Pilgrims: Many pilgrims walk on foot for ten consecutive days to reach Velankanni. To support them, a massive lodging facility with large halls was provided, comfortably accommodating 10 to 15 people per room for rest. Gathering for the Flag Hoisting: We wrapped up our walk and arrived at the main ground by 3 PM to secure a spot for the famous flag-hoisting ceremony scheduled for 6:30 PM. This sacred event marks the grand opening of the 10-day annual festival, attracting peak crowds on day one. Unwavering Devotion: Even in the intense afternoon heat, thousands began lining up hours in advance. People climbed onto rooftops, balconies, and trees just to catch a glimpse. The sheer dedication of the crowd was overwhelming to witness. The Sacred Moment: Exactly at 6:30 PM, the flag was hoisted. The entire crowd erupted in powerful prayer chants of "Hail Mary," creating an electric, deeply moving atmosphere that brought pure joy.
