🏛️ How has a 14,500 tonne stone tower leaned more than four metres off its base for centuries without crashing to the ground? In this video, we uncover the real engineering story behind the Leaning Tower of Pisa, from the soft marshy clay and shallow three metre foundation that made it tilt in 1178, to the centuries of wars, failed repairs, and near disasters that brought it close to collapse. We explore how engineers led by soil expert John Burland finally saved it with one quiet, brilliant trick, removing tiny amounts of soil from under the north side and letting gravity do the work. The tower is safer than it has been in centuries, but it is not fixed forever. Engineers still monitor its every movement, and experts expect it may one day begin creeping south again. The good news is that the same careful method can be repeated if needed, keeping the famous lean without letting it fall.
