Built on Mud: Why the Leaning Tower of Pisa Hasn't Fallen

In 1173, the city of Pisa started building a bell tower on soft, wet mud. Five years later it began to lean, and it has been trying to fall over ever since. Wars stopped the builders for almost a century. An architect flooded its base. Mussolini's engineers pumped concrete under it. And one night in 1995, the engineers trying to save it almost brought it down. So why is the Leaning Tower of Pisa still standing? In this animated documentary we dig into the mud beneath the tower: the soil that made it lean, the century-long pause that accidentally saved it, the medieval builders' "banana" fix, the lead weights and the terrifying "Black September", the engineers who straightened it by drilling out about 70 tonnes of soil, and the surprising reason it has survived at least four strong earthquakes.
