James Webb Space Telescope has given scientists an extraordinary infrared view of Titan, Saturn’s largest moon and the only moon in our Solar System with a dense atmosphere.
Webb’s observations revealed methane clouds moving through Titan’s atmosphere and helped researchers study atmospheric circulation. Even more remarkably, Webb detected the methyl radical (CH₃) on Titan for the first time—a chemically reactive molecule created when sunlight or energetic particles break apart methane. Its detection helps scientists understand how Titan builds more complex hydrocarbons in its atmosphere.
Webb and ground-based Keck observations also tracked changes in Titan’s clouds, providing a closer look at its methane weather system.
In this video, we explore what James Webb actually saw, why Titan’s atmosphere is so unusual, and what these chemical clues could reveal about one of the Solar System’s most fascinating worlds.
