What Happened to the Roman Soldiers Who Survived Teutoburg

September, the year 9. Three Roman legions march into a German forest, and almost none of them come out. You do. From a farm boy in northern Italy to a centurion with a vine stick, you live through the Teutoburg Forest, the great mutiny of the year 14, the return to the battlefield to bury the dead, the eagles of Germanicus, and a retirement nobody expected. And one friend who cheats at dice. Which rank would you have stopped at? Tell me in the comments. 0:00 Intro 0:27 Rank 1: The Farm Boy 1:23 Rank 2: The Recruit 2:47 Rank 3: The Legionary 4:15 Rank 4: The Forest 5:58 Rank 5: The Survivor 7:13 Rank 6: The Mutiny 8:25 Rank 7: The Bones 9:27 Rank 8: The Standard-Bearer 10:45 Rank 9: The Centurion 11:51 Rank 10: The Veteran 12:28 Rank 11: The Last Eagle 12:56 Rank 12: The Prisoner Based on real history and ancient sources (Tacitus, Suetonius, Cassius Dio, Velleius Paterculus, Vegetius): Augustus's legions and their terms of service, training and marching camps, soldiers' pay and deductions, the marriage ban, the Teutoburg Forest (9 AD) and Arminius, the escape from Aliso, "Varus, give me back my legions!", the mutinies of 14 AD, "Bring Me Another", Caligula's nickname, Germanicus at the battlefield (15 AD), Idistaviso and the eight eagles (16 AD), the North Sea storm, the recovered eagles (the last in 41 AD), retirement pay from the military treasury, the survivors freed after forty years of slavery (50 AD, Tacitus Annals 12.27), and the Kalkriese excavations.
