Your Life as Every Rank of a Gurkha

You carry twenty-five kilos of sand up a Himalayan hill, in a basket held by your forehead, against the clock. Thirty years later, you stand behind the King of England in gold braid. This is every rank of a Gurkha: the hill boy, the doko race in Pokhara, nine months of training in Yorkshire, the kukri and its myth, the jungle of Brunei, Afghanistan, the Victoria Cross stories, Dashain in the barracks, the Gurkha officer, the King's Orderly Officer, and the old lahure coming home. Which rank would you have stopped at? Tell me in the comments. 0:00 Intro 0:29 Rank 1: The Hill Boy 1:31 Rank 2: The Candidate 2:28 Rank 3: The Recruit 3:39 Rank 4: The Rifleman 4:11 Rank 5: The Corporal 5:01 Rank 6: The Sergeant 5:54 Rank 7: The Colour Sergeant 6:29 Rank 8: The Gurkha Officer 7:01 Rank 9: The King's Orderly Officer 7:38 Rank 10: The Old Lahure Inspired by real history: the Anglo-Nepalese War (1814–1816) and the first Gurkhas in British service, the motto "Better to die than be a coward", the "lahure" tradition, selection in Pokhara and the doko race, Gurkha recruit training at Catterick, the Brigade of Gurkhas in Brunei, Acting Sergeant Dipprasad Pun (Conspicuous Gallantry Cross, Afghanistan, 2010), Rifleman Lachhiman Gurung VC (Burma, 1945), the Falklands War (1982), Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw's famous line, the festival of Dashain, the King's Gurkha Orderly Officers, and the 2009 settlement rights decision.
