It's a normal afternoon. You're on the 60th floor of a tower in San Francisco when every phone in the office goes off: "Earthquake detected. Drop, cover, hold on." You have maybe ten seconds.
In the next sixty seconds you feel four things that make it seem like the building is failing: the floor swings, the frame bends, the whole tower rocks on its feet, and something enormous moves above your head. Every one of them is the building saving your life. We go through that minute second by second: resonance and why your tower's swing speed was chosen to stay out of step with the ground, why steel and concrete are built to bend like a fishing rod instead of snapping (and what engineers found inside the walls after the 1994 Northridge quake), why the piles go about 300 feet down to solid rock (and what happened to a tower a few blocks away whose piles stopped in the sand), and the truth about that giant steel ball.
The tower in this video is fictional. The 3D shots are simulations; sway, bending and sinking are exaggerated so you can see them. The office shots are AI-generated illustrations. Both are labelled on screen. This explains how buildings are designed; it is not a forecast.
Real earthquake guidance: drop, cover and hold on, then take the stairs, not the elevator, and expect aftershocks (ready.gov/earthquakes).
Would you take a job on the 60th floor? Comment YES or NO.
