The swift fox vanished from entire parts of North America—but an extraordinary wildlife reintroduction effort helped bring this small Great Plains predator back. This conservation documentary explores the remarkable swift fox recovery and how wildlife conservation, ecosystem restoration, tribal leadership, habitat protection, and scientific research combined to restore populations before the species reached a full-scale extinction crisis. By the 1930s, swift foxes had disappeared from Canada, and in 1969 they were declared extirpated in Montana. Native prairie loss, habitat fragmentation, poisoning campaigns, trapping, roads, and other pressures had devastated populations across their historic Great Plains range. But conservationists didn't wait. Wildlife agencies, scientists, tribal nations, private landowners, and conservation organizations launched coordinated swift fox reintroduction and prairie restoration projects across Canada and the United States. At Fort Belknap in Montana, the Aaniiih and Nakoda Nations and their partners translocated 139 swift foxes between 2020 and 2024, with monitoring later documenting dens, breeding, and young born on tribal land. This is more than an animal comeback story. It's a powerful example of species recovery, rewilding, biodiversity conservation, habitat restoration, Great Plains conservation, and ecosystem recovery in action.
